Why Mode Conditioning Cables
Multimode fiber has bandwidth limitations. The current LAN network is mostly composed of 90% multimode fiber. As fiber optic cable plants are upgraded to single-mode fiber optic cables, we must also provide a means of transfer and continue to use installed multimode fiber optic cable equipment wherever possible. However, there are some technical problems if a single mode device is used on an existing multimode fiber optic cable device. when a fast-increasing laser pulse is applied to a multimode fiber, the difference in propagation time between different modes in the light causes significant pulse broadening.
To solve this problem, a mode conversion jumper was developed to solve the Gigabit Ethernet network application using a laser-based transmitter. Mode switching jumpers are a way to achieve device drive distances in applications that exceed the installed fiber optic equipment design goals. This allows customers to upgrade their hardware technology without the cost of upgrading fiber optic equipment. In addition, the mode conversion jumper significantly improves the data signal quality while increasing the transmission distance.
How Mode Conditioning Cables work
The mode conditioning cable is a double multimode jumper with a small length of single mode fiber at the beginning of the transport length. This cable is designed to regulate laser emission and achieve an effective bandwidth such that the effective bandwidth is close to the bandwidth measured using the overflow emission method. The mode conditioning cable allows the laser transmitter to operate at gigabit rates when using multimode fiber. Will not be limited by the modulus delay. The key point is that a greater number of modes are excited in the fiber, and trade-offs are made in the mold system, where the overflow emission conditions highly motivate the mold system, avoiding extensive excitation of individual mold systems having the same power level. The laser can be launched into a single mode fiber and then connected to a multimode fiber. The access point is off center with respect to the fiber core of the single mode fiber.
Different offsets are required for 50μm and 62.5μm multimode fibers. Engineers have found that an offset of 17~23μm can achieve a bandwidth equivalent to the effective mode of the 62.5μm multimode fiber-optic overflow emission method. An offset of 10~16μm is better for 50μm multimode fiber.
Mode Conditioning Cables Installation
When using 1000BASE-LX/LH, 10GBASE-LX4, and 10GBASE-LRM transceivers with conventional 62.5 or 50μm multimode fiber, the mode conditioning cable must be installed between the transceiver and the multimode fiber optic cable at both ends of the link. MODE CONDITIONING CABLE is required for all links on FDDI-grade, OM1 and OM2 fiber types.
The mode conditioning cable is mounted between the receiver and the terminal block. Two mode conditioning cables are required for each installed device. When installing the jumper, perform the following steps:
Step 1: Insert a single-mode fiber connector into the transmit hole of the transceiver;Step 2: Insert the other half of the dual connector into the receiving hole of the transceiver;Step 3: At the other end of the jumper, insert two multimode connectors into the terminal block;Step 4: Repeat steps 1 through 3 to position the second transceiver on the other end of the network link.
